The Periods of English Literature or The Ages of English Literature.

The history of English Literature is highly sophisticated. Lets know the ages or the periods of English Literature.

1.The Old English Period or The Anglo-Saxon Period: (450 AD-1066 AD)
2. The Middle English Period:  ( 1066 AD- 1500 AD)
a) Anglo-Norman Period (1066 AD - 1340 AD)
b) The Age of Chaucer ( 1340 AD- 1400 AD)
c) Barren Age ( 1400 AD - 1485 AD)


3. The Renaissance Period: (1500 AD - 1660 AD)
Preparation for Renaissance (1500  AD- 1558  AD)
a) Elizabethan Age ( 1558  AD - 1603 AD )
b) Jacobean Age ( 1603 AD - 1625 AD)
c) Caroline Age ( 1625 AD - 1649 AD)
d) Commonwealth Period ( 1649 AD - 1660 AD)


4. The Neoclassical Period: ( 1660 AD - 1798 AD)
a) The Restoration Period ( 1660 AD - 1700 AD)
b) The Augustan Age or The Age of Pope ( 1702 AD - 1745 AD)
c) The Age of Sensibility or The Age of Johnson ( 1745 AD - 1798 AD)


5. The Romantic Period: ( 1798 AD - 1832 AD)


6. The Victorian Period : (1832 AD - 1901 AD)

b) Aestheticism and Decadence ( 1880 AD - 1901 AD)


7. The Modern Period: ( 1901 AD -1939 AD) Till Second World War 1939.
a) The Edwardian Period (1901 AD - 1910 AD)
b) The Georgian Period ( 1910 AD - 1939 AD)


8. The Post Modern Period: (1939 AD- Present)
